I never knew anything other than to get a good education, find a safe, secure job and own your own home. Debt was bad and savings were good. Easy.
Fast forward to 2010 and I found myself renting a one-bed flat in London with my boyfriend, who was out of work as it was the middle of the recession, and up to our eyeballs in debt. I did have the good job, I was a pensions actuary, but we were living hand to mouth and I was worried I was going to lose my job after my company merged with its largest competitor.
Drew was struggling to get an interview, let alone a job, so I decided to take a Friday off work to spend with him, to try and cheer him up.
We saw in the Metro that there was a property investor show round the corner from us. As Drew was home during the day, he had got quite into Homes Under the Hammer so this felt like a fun thing to do, plus it was free!
We felt totally out of place and gravitated towards a small stand in a quiet corner where there was a banner of Martin Roberts. It turns out, the stand offered property training. We laughed and said that we had no money. It turns out, you don't need to have money to start investing.
We were intrigued.
We signed up to a free 2-hour seminar and the rest, as they say, is history!
We learned about multiple income streams, passive income, time-freedom, and, most importantly, why having a "safe job" doesn't exist as one income stream makes you incredibly vulnerable.
We completed our first property training weekend on 3/4/5 December 2010 and we had our first offer accepted on New Year's Eve. Three months later, with 3 offers in total accepted, I lost my job.
We ditched the flat in London and moved into my mum's spare room (thanks mum!).
We flipped houses to clear the debt, build a small portfoilio of properties to support ourselves, bought our first home together and got married. All in our first year.
No long after, Louisa arrived, followed by Thomas 20 months later.
Passive income has allowed us to focus on our family and we are lucky enough to be able to homeschool the kids which we absolutely love.
We have continued to build the income streams and now have a BTL and serviced accommodation portfolio, various businesses and investments.
Around a year after we started our property journey, we bumped into our property trainer and shared our journey. He asked us to come tell our story to the new students. This quickly progressed into teaching so we've been teaching for almost as long as we've been investing!
Our primary focus is the family and all of our incomes are geared towards us being able to live our dream life.
We love mini-breaks, long walks together, arts and crafts, and time by the sea.
Personally, I am massively into my spiritual journey and love all kinds of holistic therapites, retreats and loving communities.
